The ShenZhong Link consists of two artificial islands, two high-level bridges, a causeway and an immersed tunnel, and it provides a unique opportunity to create an architectural landmark, which coming generations can be proud of. Shenzhen and Zhongshan are located on opposite sides of the Pearl River.
The ShenZhong Link is a large-scale project. It will include eight traffic lanes in dual directions and have a capacity of 90,000 cars per day. Upon completion, the tunnel will mark a world-record as the widest immersed tunnel with the widest road bores ever built.
The suspension bridge will have a bridge span of 1,658 metres, and this type of bridge is the preferred choice to accommodate the strong heavy typhoon winds in the area and ensure optimum wind stability. The main island will accommodate a 15,000 m² conference hall, offices and restaurant facilities, and a promenade.
The Pearl River estuary is a vast expanse of low, calm water and the main island is designed to minimise its damming effect in the water. Guangdong is one of the richest provinces in China and a major infrastructure upgrade is required to support the continuous growth in the area. The link will contribute to development by reducing the travel time between Shenzhen and Zhongshan from 120 minutes to 20 minutes.
