Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Link consists of 70 metres span viaducts, 110-metre span viaducts with haunches, a 220 metres multiple span extradozed bridge (Jiuzhou Bridge), a 220 metres span two pylons extradozed bridge (Jianghai Bridge) and a single pylon 2 x 350 metres cable-stayed span (Qingzhou Bridge).
The basic unit is the concrete box girder with cantilevers provided with ribs, due to their length. The large cantilevers give the bridges an elegant appearance in spite of the large depth of the box girders.
The design relates creatively to an image of two islands holding a pearl and being related to each other. They are not separate entities – there is a mythical relationship between them, a correlation, a connection. Symbolic of the entire link and the myths of the Pearl River. Together the two islands frame the navigational channel in a harmonious way and make a statement of its own.
The structure is equipped with louvers above the tunnel entrance providing crossing drivers safety in mediating the transition in light intensity from daylight to artificial light in the tunnel.
